In the period January 16-20, 2023, a 5-day workshop on the project “Innovative methods, approaches and practices for effective teaching of STEM subjects in an electronic environment” was held in Lithuania. The meeting was attended by representatives from North Macedonia, Lithuania and Bulgaria.

The goal of the project was to conduct training on the application of problem-based learning methods in an online environment and more specifically to integrate problem-based learning into the process of providing high-quality education in an online environment.

10 participants from Bulgaria, representatives of the CSO “Tsar Simeon the Great”, took part in the interesting meetings and events on the project: Dr. Mladen Lambev – project manager, Yanitsa Boycheva – expert, “European programs and projects”, Angela Mitrovska – expert. “European programs and projects”, Konstantina Nesheva – director, Velina Kadieva – pedagogical advisor, Alexandra Vladimirova – German language teacher, Stanislava Stefanova – chemistry and physics teacher, Teodora Dimitrova – social and natural sciences teacher, Ivan Dragomirov – teacher of English language and Yani Dimitrov – physics teacher.

Our team visited municipal and private kindergartens and schools, where they observed classes in which teachers visually demonstrated how to teach STEM. After each visit, participants from the three countries held discussions where they discussed good ideas and practices.

A lot of interest was caused by some of the classes in the kindergarten, where the youngest students were not using STEM, but the STEAM learning method, which emphasises artistic skills and disciplines that develop curiosity, design, innovation, imagination, creativity and the search for diverse solutions of the same problem, but with a new creative and artistic perspective.

At Vilnius University, Stanislava Stefanova and Teodora Dimitrova gave a presentation to participants from Lithuania and Macedonia, with whom they shared their experience in conducting lessons and implementing the STEM methodology in “Tsar Simeon the Great” Secondary School. Colleagues from North Macedonia also shared their views on the subject.

“The visit to Lithuania inspired us and gave us confidence that we are going in the right direction. We came home with new, fresh ideas for conducting interdisciplinary lessons with a practical focus, involving different subjects. Once again, we made sure that the STEM or STEAM approach is at the heart of the education of the future. The new generations are being prepared so that they can live in a constantly changing environment and are even being trained for jobs that do not yet exist due to the changes that technologies such as artificial intelligence will bring,” says pedagogical adviser Velina Kadieva.

The event “Training for 30 teachers in Vilnius, Lithuania” is realised within the framework of the project “Innovative methods, approaches and practices for effective teaching of STEM subjects in an electronic environment”, No. 2020-1-BG01-KA226-SCH-095199 .
